FAQs

What is the SERU?

The Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) was created by research faculty at the University of California, Berkeley to expand understanding of the undergraduate student experience. Results of the survey have been effective in improving academic and co-curricular programs and services, informing policy related to undergraduate education, and increasing research opportunities. The survey is now used by a consortium of research universities invited to participate from among American Association of Universities member institutions.

Why should I take the SERU?

What you tell us will be used to improve the student experience and educational outcomes here at UGA.

What types of questions are on the SERU?

The SERU questions cover a broad range of topics, from the amount of time spent studying to the type of research experiences undergraduates enjoy. Questions also gauge the impact of college on such areas as critical thinking, writing and revising term papers, academic preparation, research experiences, overall satisfaction, and time management.

How will information gathered on the SERU be used?

Results will be reported to academic departments and administration at UGA and will be used to improve our educational programs and student services.  We will also share our data with other universities in the consortium to improve our understanding of educational best practices at leading research universities. The collected data will be used by researchers, professors and students from various countries to gain a better understanding on how to improve the college experience.

Who can take the SERU?

Only undergraduate students who are 18 or older and currently enrolled at the University of Georgia can take the SERU.

How long does the survey take to complete?

The SERU takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

How do students participate in the SERU survey?

Undergraduates at the University of Georgia may access the SERU through the link on this website and the emails they receive inviting them to participate.

Can I take the SERU survey on my phone?

The SERU will work on most mobile devices, although it is not a responsive design. It is much easier to take on a large format phone, iPad, tablet or laptop.

What browser can I use?

The SERU works best in Firefox or Chrome browsers. On smaller mobile devices that operate using a Safari web browser, you may need to slide the screen slightly to view all answer options.

Is the data gathered on the SERU confidential?

Your identity on the SERU will remain confidential.

Will I be able to see the results of the SERU?

We will publish an announcement to students when the data is available and post it on this site.

How will I know if I win a prize?

You will be notified at your UGA email address.
